A Message From Darren Kennedy

Generals,
I am honored to be named the Principal of Grassland Middle School and excited to meet all of you at the Generals Fair on July 26th. I have met with members of the Parents’ Club and Grassland Athletic Booster Club and have been truly amazed by the level of commitment to Grassland Middle. This is an amazing school with students, parents, teachers and the community that have a vested interest in preparing students to excel in academics and in life.
Girls' Night Out
The 2nd Annual Grassland’s "Girls' Night Out" was held on April 8. This was a fabulous, fun learning and bonding event. Each girl received a goody bag and was able to learn about Career, Health, Fitness Fashion, Beauty, and much more. Our very own Chief of Police Faulkner was our keynote speaker.

Clay Target SCTP Team
The GMS Generals Clay Target SCTP Team traveled to Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club and competed in the Doug Server Invitation on Saturday, April 9, 2016.
The Doug Server Shoot is a fundraiser for the Cumberland County Clay Busters. It is a statewide qualifying event put on by the CCCB team members under the guidelines of the USA & TNYESS programs (Youth Education in Shooting Sports). We had a great day of fellowship and competition.
Our student-athletes were able to meet the University of Tennessee Shotgun Team,
many of whom scored the event. We also met many of the team members and parents of the CCCB, and one young lady in particular, a 5th grader, who won the 2015 National Novice Championship!
Six GMS SCTP team members went to Crossville, and Squad 1 shot 385, placing second in the Junior Division (grades 6-8). It was another chilly and windy day, but our team was building confidence and shooting well. Squad leader, Campbell Andrews shot 91 of 100 with a coveted "25 Straight" and was "HOA" (high overall score) for the Middle School division. Matthew Starkey, Ian Arney, Hughes Batson, and Lukas Rabiner rounded out the GMS Generals' second place squad and provided strong scores for the team. Luke Lindahl also participated as an individual in his very first tournament, and shot well considering the chilly, windy conditions.
This event was our first statewide event. Our next competition is a Middle TN competition at Big Springs Sporting Club in Murfreesboro.

Softball
The GMS softball team had a very successful season this year. The team had three 8th graders (Alex Filipiak, Ashley Broyles, and Jessi Williams), six 7th graders (Cydney Jennings, Lucy Tschantz, Carlynn Atamaniuk, Emily Mayfield, Emma Hampton, and Emme Glover), and three 6th graders (Sydney Harris, Elizabeth Minge, and Jean Costello). The team played their home games for the first time ever on their new home field on the campus of GMS – and spent much of the season, with the help of their parents, preparing the field for games. The team finished with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses. Their coaches were Lisa Friedl and Tommy Koehler.

Girls' Lacrosse
The Girls' Lacrosse Team had a great season. We ended the season with a 27-3 record for the varsity squad and a similar record for our JV squad. Our captains were Ashley Gleeson, Caroline Short, Caroline Stone, and Josie Ward. Our goalie responsibilities were split between Olivier Johnson and Hallie Nuccio. We had forty-four girls playing on the team. We recognized our rising ninth grade players (Ashley Gleeson, Mickayla Polisky, Hannah Sykes, Caroline Short, Ana Helis, Caroline Stone, Olivier Johnson, and Anna Grace Sauvie) for their leadership and mentoring our younger girls. We look forward to the 2017 season and invite all girls in grades 4-8 to join and learn to play and love the game of girls' lacrosse. Special thanks for all the help we received from parents and family members.

A Message From Laura Miller
Welcome to another fabulous year at Grassland Middle School! My name is Laura Miller, and I am your Parents' Club President for the 2016- 2017 school year. I have a rising 7th-grade daughter and a son still in elementary school. Last year the Parents' Club did so many great things, including buying an entire Computer on Wheels station (COW). Though it’s only July, we are in full back-to-school mode. Our Executive Board met a few weeks ago, and we have some very exciting plans coming your way. If you have driven by the school in the last few days, you may have noticed that some work is going on in the front grass area. I am excited to report that we are getting a new sign!! This project has been in the works for a few years, and Parents' Club is proud that it will be completed before school starts in August. Be sure to mark your calendars for August 11th at 9 AM for our first General Board meeting of the school year. All GMS parents are welcomed, and we want to hear from you.
Our amazing General Fair committee is putting the final touches on the Tuesday, July 26th event, and we are excited to announce that the new GMS Principal Mr. Darren Kennedy will be joining us all evening for a meet and greet! The General Fair is one of the Parents' Club's biggest events for the entire year. It is a great opportunity to order your spirit wear and learn about the wide variety of clubs, sports, and activities that go on all year long at Grassland Middle. While the kids are catching up and connecting with new friends, parents may order school directories and INVEST. And of course everyone loves getting their updated schedules once registration is complete. See you Tuesday evening!
Looking forward to serving you,
Laura Miller

Track
Our track team saw a ton of success this season. Our boys and girls teams showed a massive amount of improvement from previous years. Eighth grader Nancy Robertshaw led our girls in the sprint races and set a county championship meet record in the 200 meter with a time of 27.51. Our boys 4X800 meter team, made up of Sam Lowe, Wyatt Harnage, Jackson Harris, and DJ Durham, also set a county record with a blazing time of 9:26.02. We were very excited by our improvement from this season and look forward to another great team next year.

Grassland Boys Lacrosse Spring 2016
The Grassland Boys Lacrosse team started Spring 2016 practice at the end of January, with games beginning in March. With the players' hard work and new coaches, Ryan Burns and Taylor Best, the Varsity and JV teams had one of the best Spring Seasons in the history of the program. The Generals fought hard and ended their season in May with a winning record of 10-3 for the Varsity team and 7-4 for the JV team.
